AISI M42 Steel Round Bar Sheet Plate, JIS SKH59, DIN 1.3247

M42 tool steel is high-speed steel with high cobalt. And it also is called JIS SKH59 and DIN 1.3247 steel. It is mainly used for high toughness precision wear-resistant hardware cold stamping die and cutting tools. It has high toughness and hardness, could reach to 70HRC. Its hot hardness is high and easy to grind and cut. The cutting tools which are made of M42 steel can cut cast superalloys, titanium alloys, and ultra-high-strength steels. But the toughness is a little bad, the temperature should be lower during the quenching. It is used widely to manufacture high precision and complex cutting tools because of its great grinding properties. M42 Steel round bar sheet plate properties and heat treat as below.

M42 Steel Application

The application is decided by M42 steel chemical composition and properties.

  1. It is used to make a variety of wear-resistant, impact-resistant tools for powerful cutting.
  2. It is used to produce a variety of high-hard and saw blades, drills, taps, broaches, hobs and milling cutters.
  3. It is the material of advanced dies, screw dies and punches that require more toughness and complex shapes.
  4. It is used for cold forging dies and deep drawing dies.

1.3247 Steel Characteristics

  1. The content of cobalt is 8% or 10%
  2. Great wear resistance, hardness and hot hardness
  3. Has excellent red hardness and cutting performance
  4. Be used widely in industry, such as cutting tools, milling cutters and etc
  5. Has high impact ductility

M42 Steel Round Bar Sheet Plate Heat Treatment And Produced

1.Machinability

It can be drilled, turned, threaded, broached, milled and tapped when it is in its annealed condition and rated at 45% of 1% carbon steel.

2.Forging

It is preheated to 871°C (1599°F) in a slow manner and then soaked. This is followed by rapid heating to 1093°C (1999°F) and slow cooling. It is not suitable that temperatures below 982°C (1799°F) for the forging process.

3.Tempering

M42 tool steel is tempered for three times at 538-593°C (1000-1099°F) and then cooled completely between cycles to get good results. Tempering is performed in vacuum furnaces or in salt baths.

4.Annealing

Annealing must be performed after hot working and before re-hardening.

Heat at a rate not exceeding 400°F per hour (222°C per hour) to 1500-1575°F (843-857°C), and hold for 1 hour per inch (25.4 mm) of thickness, minimum of 2 hours. Then cool slowly with the furnace at a rate not exceeding 50°F per hour (28°C per hour) to 1000°F (538°C). Continue cooling to ambient temperature in the furnace or in air. The resultant hardness should be 269 HBW or lower.

5.Hardening

It is preheated to 871°C (1599°F), soaked and finally heated to 1204°C (2199°F).

6.Quenching

A salt media is used for quenching M42 tool steel at 538°C (1000°F) and then the steel is air cooled.
