AISI 4130 Steel Coil, JIS SCM430, DIN 1.7218

AISI 4130 steel coil is a low alloy steel containing chromium, molybdenum and medium carbon, which is very similar to 4140 steel. It also has the characteristics of high strength and toughness, high hardenability, good weldability and good machinability. AISI 4130 steel has relatively high requirements for welding and heat treatment. With proper heat treatment, it is easier to process and has excellent ductility after annealing. 4130 steel composition and more information as below.

AISI 4130 Steel Coil Application

AISI 4130 steel coil contains chromium and molybdenum as reinforcements and is easy to weld, critical for fabrication, welding, cutting and other high stress, high temperature applications. Commonly used in the following industries:

(1) Medium-sized machinery manufacturing
It is mainly used to manufacture quenched and tempered parts with large cross-section and working under high stress conditions;

(2) Industrial manufacturing
Commonly used to make milling cutters and tools;

(3) Automobile industry
Manufacture of vehicle parts, gears, bearings, etc.;

There are also industries such as aerospace, oil and gas industries, and chemicals.

4130 Steel Coil Characteristics

  1. Easy to weld, easy to process
  2. Excellent ductility
  3. Corrosion resistance, good heat resistance
  4. High strength, high toughness
  5. High hardenability and wide application
  6. Good machinability

4130 Steel Coil Heat Treatment

1. 4130 Steel Annealing

Once 4130 steel has been forged into sheet or coil, it can be annealed immediately.
In a furnace, it can be annealed at 860°C (1575°F) followed by air cooling at 482°C (900°F).
The main reason for annealing 4130 steel is to obtain a structure suitable for machining. The final structure obtained by annealing the steel alloy makes it ideal for forming simple shapes such as coils.

2. 4130 Steel Normalizing

The normalizing process heats the steel to a higher temperature than annealing, usually 900°C (1650 º F), but can fluctuate around 10 º C (50 º F) due to production environment or experience.
Occasionally, normalizing may be done on rolled or forged steel to condition it prior to heat treatment. For example, a higher temperature value of 910 °C is used before the steel is quenched and tempered. If normalization is final processing, 890 °C will be used.
The process uses such high temperatures to create conditions for the steel to transform from ferrite to austenite, which is then air cooled until complete.

3. 4130 Steel Hardening

Hardening of 4130 steel can be done by cold working or heat treatment with the aim of changing the properties of 4130 steel by increasing its hardness.
4130 steel is typically austenitized at 1500 to 1600 º F (815 to 870 º C) to convert all trace constituents to austenite. The 4130 steel hardening treatment produces martensite after the alloy is quenched.

4. 4130 Steel Tempering

Tempering of AISI 4130 steel is carried out between 398 and 565°C (750 and 1050°F), depending on the desired strength level. The purpose is to relieve the stress of the metal after hardening. The lower the tempering temperature, the greater the strength. Different tempering temperatures will produce different results.

ASTM 4130 Steel Coil Forged

Forging of AISI 4130 steel can be performed at temperatures between 950 °C and 1230 °C (1750 and 2250 ºF). The lower the temperature, the finer the grains will be. Too low a temperature may affect the uniformity of the structural section, requiring normalizing before heat treating the steel.
